Beach Volleyball: A Truly Versatile Game
Beach volleyball is a great impromptu game. Almost anywhere that there is sand and a net; groups of friends, acquaintances, and sometimes even strangers will gather for a few rounds of beach volleyball. A playful game of beach volleyball doesn’t have to be too strenuous, so it is easy to have teams with people of all different ages and with mixed levels of fitness. This makes beach volleyball an ideal family game for a lively summer afternoon.
Of course, beach volleyball can be also be a very strenuous game in a competitive setting. When serious athletes get together for a beach volleyball tournament, the ball flies through the air fast and viciously.
To play beach volleyball, you only need a minimum of two people per team for a total of four players. However, the less experienced and skilled the players are, the more people you will probably want to have on each team in order to keep the ball in the air. The more players that are involved, the less ground each player will be responsible for covering. A game with just a few participants is likely to be quite a workout as everybody scrambles across the sand to reach the ball; whereas in a game with a large team different players can concentrate on their own areas of the sand, enabling them to rest a bit when the ball is elsewhere. The fact that beach volleyball can be a fun, low-key game for a friendly crowd of casual players or a serious endeavor with a quartet of accomplished athletes makes it one of the most versatile sports.
The rules of beach volleyball are the same as the rules for any form of volleyball, but play on the sand tends to be a bit different than play on a court. It is much more difficult to move quickly on sand than it is on most surfaces, so play is generally slower than in court volleyball. To train for beach volleyball, athletes must spend a lot of time developing their lower body strength so they can move quickly and accurately across the ground despite the friction and resistance of the sand. While powerful legs are an important part of successful volleyball play, the ability to jump high and hard and land without injury are substantially more vital in beach volleyball than in court volleyball.
Even experienced court players often don’t anticipate how difficult it will be to run and jump on sand, so volleyball players who are new to the beach often sustain injuries because they misjudged how much resistance the sand would give them. Skinned knees and elbows are par for the course among players at all levels of the game, especially because a player often forgets to protect him or herself when diving for the ball in the heat of the game.
Coaching Girls Volleyball: Top 5 Ways Girls Volleyball Players Can Make Pepper Improve Their Game
Many girls volleyball players don’t know how to use the Pepper Warm up Drill as a way to improve their volleyball game. Below are 5 ways elite women volleyball players use “Pepper” as a way to play better volleyball.
1. In womens volleyball, Pepper is first used To Improve Ball Control.
2. Secondly, women volleyball players use Pepper to Improve their Serve Receive Technique.
In girl’s volleyball I believe that Pepper is the number one way for indoor players to improve their ball control…if they know how to do it. You have to be aware of why you are Peppering in the first place. If not, then it just becomes a way to raise your body temperature…some.
a. When YOU set the volleyball -whoever sets should be working on form and technique.
The Goal- the volleyball should go right to your partner without them taking more than one step in any direction to chase your ball.
b. When Your partner passes back-concentration should be on using excellent form for serve receive and free ball passing-especially now since this is an easy ball.
The Goal- first to pass or bump the ball high enough so she can hit the ball right back without taking more than one step. Secondly, bump setting practice for accuracy so each and every ball goes right back to above the hitters extended hitting arm.
c. When You hit. You hit a controlled 1/2 to 3/4 speed down ball right to your partner. In this instance you have a controlled situation in which to practice the finer points of your armswing. Concentrate -on “reaching” raising your elbow and hitting high while controlling the ball speed. Don’t hit by your ear just because there’s no net! Hit low in Pepper means you hit low in hitting warm ups and then in your girls volleyball game. Trust me-it all transfers. Your body is recording every movement you make it do-so pledge to yourself to do the movements right.
The Goal- To hit the spot you are aiming for-which in Pepper is right to your partner-so that she doesn’t have to move more than one step UNLESS you choose to mix up your attack and include a tip to your partner. This is highly recommended after you have improved your ball control.
d. Your partner digs-focus on being down in your defensive position before your partner hits the ball meaning by the time she makes contact. Because Pepper partners are relatively close together you will automatically be developing quick reflexes. Here is where you practice combining quick reflex with BALL CONTROL. React quickly…then control the ball. React quickly then c-o-n-t-r-o-l the ball.
The Goal- Learning to absorb a hard hit ball at a close distance and delivering that ball (softly, gently people) in control to your target without making them move more than one step. Fight to maintain control of the ball.
3. Women Volleyball players use Pepper to Increase Their Range in Defense.
Advanced girl’s volleyball players can challenge their partners (you both need to agree to make the drill work) by tipping the ball further and further out of reach – the more of these balls you get in pepper-the more you will get in the game. It all transfers. Or by hitting a 1/2 to 3/4 speed down ball a foot or 2 to the right or left of the defender will increase your range of harder hit defensive balls that you dig up around you.
4. In womens and girls volleyball Pepper helps players To Narrow Their Focus and Increase Concentration.
In girls volleyball games Pepper warm ups often take place in a crowded environment. Either with 25 teammates on either side of you, or near that net divider that separates the volleyball courts in a tournament, fans that walk up and down the aisles, team benches, believe it or not this is a great practice oportunity- to narrow your focus and concentration so that it doesn’t matter what happens around you …the world can come to an end but your focus is only on the volleyball.
5. Women Volleyball players use Pepper To Increase Their Reactions and Reduce Fear of the Ball.
As your ball control gets better then you and your Pepper partner should agree to challenge each other to make each other better players. When you get to the point where you are exchanging 10-12 pass, set, hit combinations in a row Stop and both of you commit to hitting harder at each other. About 3/4 the speed of your regularly hit spike-BUT YOUR GOAL is to still to work up to as many pass-set-hit exchanges as you can while Controlling the ball. Your digs should still be going right to each other.
Volleyball Videos: How Watching Video Improves Your Volleyball Game
Watching volleyball videos can seem like the most boring aspect of pre game preparation but like most things you just have to know how to MAKE it work for you.
Usually there are two basic reasons why a coach has you watch volleyball videos…in preparation of an upcoming game or to get better at performing a particular volleyball fundamental. It’s easy to get lulled into or lost in the moment of the game on the small screen but instead of watching every play just for the sake of saying “hey I finished watching the video” pick a particular volleyball fundamental that you need to improve and watch the best one or two players perform that fundamental over and over again.
If you need to improve your volleyball serve receive skill or “pass the ball” better then that’s the part of the game you need to focus on watching other more experienced players do. Unless your volleyball coach has instructed you to watch something in particular (like the way a team plays defense or the way a player transitions off the net) focus on watching a better player perform the skill that you need to work on the most. How does she do that?
What are they doing? How are they standing while the server still has the volleyball? Do they have a stutter step or do they hop jump as the ball is crossing the net? Which foot is forward? Is their upper body straight up or crouched over? Are they straight legged or are they in a slight squat position when they serve receive?
This is what happens to me when I’m watching a volleyball video…
If I’m watching someone serve receive well….I watch this player execute the right volleyball skill or technique over and over and over again. I want to take that “scene” and take that “visual” with me so I start playing that scene repeatedly in my head. I start visualizing that player doing the same thing in my mind after I’ve stopped watching. When I go home, when I go to bed, when I’m washing dishes, before practice I get used to seeing this player do the serve receive correctly in my mind.
Then… I start hearing my coach’s words on how to do this skill correctly. So then I hear my volleyball coach, I hear my coach say “step to the ball”, “present my platform”, “use my legs”, and I keep hearing my volleyball coach’s words over and over like a tape recorder in my mind. This is actually kind of easy because when you aren’t performing a skill correctly THAT IS when your coach starts yelling at you anyway, right? What they are yelling at the top of their lungs already exists in your mind so you just start playing that mental volleyball videotape, over and over.
Then little by little both what I SEE in my mind and what I HEAR in my head start meshing together. When I re-play this continuously in my mind these two things start coming together where I form a mental volleyball movie of my own. When this mental movie starts playing then after awhile my body starts to respond to the mental voice I hear and the mental picture I’ve been playing.
My body starts doing the things that I have been rehearsing over and over again in my mind. I start seeing myself -take the place of that player and in my mind I see myself performing the pass correctly over and over.
And the aspects of the game that I am playing over and over start to become automatic and I start doing these things physically- not just mentally- but actually in real life.
That’s how I make watching volleyball videos work for me.
It’s great when you can hear a volleyball champion who has played for years commentate on the game. Singin Smith, Karch Kiraly, Mike Dodd and Holly McPeak do the color commentary with Chris Marlowe for the AVP Beach Pro Volleyball Tour games on television. All these volleyball Champions represent some of the greatest players in the history of the AVP and all are past Olympians with multiple gold, silver and bronze medals in Indoor and Beach Volleyball. Listening to them talk about the game is like going to volleyball school. The more you do it…the better volleyball player you can become….and that’s one way to make volleyball videos improve your volleyball game.
