The history of volleyball is a relatively young one that is very similar to a sport that originated near by. Both basketball and volleyball history are said to have begun in Massachusetts with basketball originating in 1891 and volleyball history in 1895.

William Morgan was a coach and director at the YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts and they needed to devise a game that could be played indoors to combat the cold northeast winters. Basketball had been developed but was much more of a fast paced game. He wanted something more controlled and deliberate. He decided to come up with a game similar to badminton that obviously didn’t use the rackets but incorporated a net. He originally called the sport Mintonette and the court was a rectangular field that hosted several players on each side.

It became apparent that the name would need to be changed as it was obvious that the players were volleying the ball back and forth, hence the name volleyball. They began to cut back on the number of players on each side of the court as well. Originally it was something similar to backyard bbq volleyball where fifteen or twenty people would cram onto a side. So they limited the number to six players per side and determined that rotating the players would give everyone a fair shot at playing up front and back. The other major change that needed to take place was changing the number of hits per side. Initially you could hit it until you were able to get it over. The eventually determined that three hits per side was a fair number. The equipment began to see a drastic makeover as well. The volleyball which was first made by Spalding back in the early 1900’s and they still produce volleyballs today is very similar in shape, size and weight to today’s ball. The final piece of the puzzle was the height of the net. Initially the net was set at whatever the park or gym felt like normally around the average height of the men playing or six feet. It became apparent that that was just too short and not challenging enough. They ended up setting the standard height for men at just below eight feet and woman at seven feet four inches.

As settlers moved west in search of the gold rush the game began to migrate. Players on the west coast of the US began to pick up the sport and it grew. Then different associations began to form and the domestic USVA and the international FIVB took hold of its development.

Then the sport was customary to be played in Grammar School and Universities. Initially started as a men’s sport then went into a period over the mid 1900’s when it was considered a female sport. Today it is simply a great sport that either party can enjoy.

The west coast beach attitude quickly picked up the game of volleyball and decided to apply it to the beach. Beach volleyball was said to have began around the 1940’s in California’s South Bay. Today the development of the AVP, Association of Volleyball Professionals has propelled the sport to a major attraction for both male and female athletes.

Indoor and Beach Volleyball have grown tremendously in the past hundred years. Both have had the chance to excel at the Olympic Games which has produced a number of Gold Medalists for the US. Today the history of volleyball continues to grow as it remains a sport that people of all ages and ability can enjoy from the gym to the beach…So goes the History of Volleyball.

For those who want to participate in a great aerobic workout combined with a game, then volleyball is a great option. If you have decided to coach the game of volleyball, then you will definitely want to know the basics of the game and how everything works together in order to give your players a great workout while having fun.

Volleyball was first developed in the year 1895 in Massachusetts by a YMCA physical director. It was first none as Mintonette and was established as a hybrid of tennis and handball. It was first developed in order to have an indoor sport that would help to keep players of these other sports in shape. At first, those who played would be allowed to catch the ball and throw it over the net. In 1896, this particular game was seen at an expedition where it gained some key elements and rules to make it into the game it is today.

When one begins the game of volleyball, they will want to have six players on both sides of the net. These should be divided with three players in the front and three players in the back. The game will begin by one player serving the ball to the other side. The opponents will have three tries to get the ball back over the net. If the ball goes out of bounds, falls onto the court, or doesn’t go over to the other side of the court, the other team gains a point.

Each time one team gains a point, they will change positions on the court, allowing some players to hit further from the back and others to hit closer to the net. This also gives every player the chance to serve. With each point gained will be a clockwise rotation to the spot that is on the right of the player.

The basics of volleyball can lead to a team that understands the ways to achieve new goals through the game. By finding the foundation of volleyball, all of the players will have the ability to set their own standards and go for the spike.

A day at the beach should be accompanied by friends and games to play with your friends. Of course, the types of games you may decide to play can depend on the type of beach you are at. Some beaches have very fine sand, some have small stones and hard shells mixed in the sand, and some can be narrow or wide. One of the most popular and well-known beach games is beach volleyball.

Beach volleyball has the same rules as indoor volleyball. The game of beach volleyball originated in Southern California and was designed to give surfers an activity to do when the surf was down and is now widely played around the world. There are two teams separated by a high net and its objective is to score points by landing the ball on the sand of the other team’s court. Competitive beach volleyball is played with two players but recreational teams can have up to six players. The differences between beach volleyball and indoor volleyball include surface area, team size, and court size. Clearly, the main difference between the two games is the playing surface. Beach volleyball is played on a sand floor and indoor volleyball is played on a hard surface area. The team size for indoor volleyball is six players per team whereas in beach volleyball there is usually two players per team. Another difference between beach volleyball and indoor volleyball is court size. Indoor volleyball has a court size of nine by eighteen meters while beach volleyball courts measure eight by sixteen meters. Another difference between the two is uniforms. Beach volleyball uniforms were standardized in 1999. The required uniform for women is the swimsuit, given the option between a one-piece and a two-piece bikini, most women have chosen the bikini. The chosen uniform for men is shorts and a tank-top. In some conservative cultures however, the swimsuit is just too revealing to be worn as a uniform and the rules have been adjusted and replaced the uniforms with less revealing shorts and tank-tops instead of bikinis.

There is a certain type of lifestyle and culture associated with beach volleyball. With this sport having originated in Southern California and Hawaii, the beach volleyball culture is similar to the surf culture. The types of people who play beach volleyball tend to be the beach-bum, hippie types, with their tanned skin and Jerry Garcia’s “I will get by” attitude. The type of clothing they tend to wear includes swimsuits, board shorts, and tank-tops with sandals or bare feet.

Beach volleyball can be a fun sport to play one-on-one with your best friend, or with a group of people with up to six players on each team. So next time you go to the beach, reserve a nice spot next to a beach volleyball net and have some fun!
